Showcasing architectural innovation in response to Hong Kong in transformation

“Transformative Hong Kong” Exhibition (Hong Kong Exhibition) is one of the nine Collateral Events of the 18th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition. Following the overwhelming success in Venice last year, the Hong Kong Exhibition is returned to Hong Kong from now till 11th March with the Response Exhibition. The Hong Kong Exhibition is curated by Ar. Sarah Kwok Yan Lee, Professor Hendrik Tieben and Ar. Yutaka Yano. In response to “The Laboratory of the Future”, the overall title defined by Chief Curator of the 18th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition, Lesley Lokko, the Hong Kong curatorial team developed the Hong Kong Exhibition, aiming to reveal Hong Kong’s constant transformation in responding to the world with the direction of creative visions in our city headed by our talented pool of design and architecture professionals.

Consisting of 11 sets of exhibits with interactive mixed media representations and visual essays, snapshots of this transformative moment in our city, the Hong Kong Exhibition featured the voices of a diverse group of creators who are distinctly Hong Kong in nature, and in vision. The exhibition was presented in three designated scales – “Territorial Transformations”, “Architectural Transformations” and “Public Space Transformations”, with focused themes on sustainability, climate change, technology and energy/resource management, and how the architectural collaborations and innovations using the city as the “laboratory” to meet the challenges faced by the future generation of Hong Kong.

To interact with Hong Kong audience, a series of interactive activities is organized in Central Market such as thematic talks and a Bamboo Lantern Workshop(sponsored by ERCO Lighting) in the Response Exhibition.

“Harmony in Diversity – Connecting the Metropolis by in-between”
Kuala Lumpur-Nanjing-Hong Kong Roving Architecture Exhibition
Sharing the art of architecture and uncovering Hong Kong’s unique urban landscape by local architects

Curated by Ar. Professor Paul Chu, Ar. Jacky Cheung and Mr. Kan Chan (the Curatorial Team), “Harmony in Diversity-Connecting the Metropolis by In-Between” Kuala Lumpur-Nanjing-Hong Kong Roving Architecture Exhibition was successfully showcased in Kuala Lumpur and Nanjing. The curatorial team adopted the “in-between” as the keyword of the exhibition theme and invited exhibitors from different generations to narrate the connection between architecture and urban space from the perspective of Hong Kong architects, and to showcase Hong Kong’s distinctive architectural and urban conditions through mixed presentation channels such as metaverse technology, multimedia player, interactive installation and visual creativity.

The exhibition features 16 sets of exhibits created by different professional groups in partnership with architects from Hong Kong. An Interactive display frame was specially designed and made for each set of the exhibits to co-create more collaborations while allowing visitors to explore the exhibition with invisible boundaries.

The team hopes to illustrate that the unique urban landscape development of Hong Kong is combining various “in-between” elements, contrasting while integrating, consistent yet everchanging. Meanwhile, it allows experts and the public to reflect on the development direction of Hong Kong in order to meet future challenges in spatial planning. The final stop of “Harmony in Diversity-Connecting the Metropolis by In-Between” Exhibition to be held in Hong Kong from 23rd February to 11th March 2024.
