• Designing for Climate, Culture, and Comfort: G Hotel Kelawai by K2LD Architects

    15 June 2025

In the culturally rich city of George Town, Malaysia, renowned for its UNESCO-listed heritage and vibrant urban life, K2LD Architects have delivered a hotel that is as visually compelling as it is environmentally responsive.

G Hotel Kelawai is a bold architectural statement that redefines tropical urban hospitality through form, function, and finesse, and a price-point in the markets favoured by many online commentaries.

G Hotel Kelawai stands as a striking 24-storey landmark in George Town, designed by Singapore-based K2LD Architects to meet the demands of discerning business travellers while responding intelligently to its tropical context.

The hotel’s architecture is defined by a double-layered façade system: an outer aluminium sun-shading screen, durable, recyclable, and visually dynamic, paired with deep concrete overhangs that both shield the interiors and support the sculptural screening elements. These geometric forms create a rhythmic visual identity that is instantly recognizable and deeply functional.

K2LD’s design philosophy is rooted in contextual sensitivity and timeless elegance. At G Hotel Kelawai, this manifests in a tripartite composition that separates public, semi-public, and private zones—allowing each space to respond specifically to its function. The podium and rooftop are animated with social energy, housing a garden alfresco, a rooftop infinity pool, and Penang’s first sky bar, while the tower above offers serene, well-appointed guest rooms.

Inside, the design continues to impress. The entrance lobby opens into a triple-volume space that connects visually and spatially to the dining areas and a tree-lined courtyard, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior. This permeability reflects K2LD’s commitment to creating spaces that are not only luxurious but also deeply connected to their surroundings.

K2LD’s broader portfolio spans civic, residential, and commercial projects across the Asia-Pacific, and their work on G Hotel Kelawai exemplifies their ability to blend innovation with cultural resonance. In a city celebrated for its historic architecture, this hotel offers a contemporary counterpoint—an icon of modern design that complements George Town’s global appeal without competing with its heritage.
