(30 March 2025, Hong Kong) The 2025 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens made history with its inaugural edition at Kai Tak Sports Park, drawing over 110,000 local and international spectators across three electrifying days, marking an increase of nearly 14,000 attendees compared to last year. The event showcased elite global teams competing at the highest level in Hong Kong’s new world-class stadium, creating an unforgettable atmosphere for fans.
As Hong Kong’s premier integrated sports and entertainment landmark, Kai Tak Sports Park is committed to advancing sports development while boosting leisure, tourism, and event-driven economy. The Park provided comprehensive support throughout the tournament to ensure smooth operations and a world-class spectator experience.
During the peak period of the event, the Sports Park deployed over 2,400 staff members to provide services. At peak entry times, an average of 134 spectators passed through security screening and ticket validation per minute. The average exit time from the venue was 14 minutes, and operations ran smoothly. A diverse range of food and beverage options blending Western and Chinese cuisines was available, with a total of 350,000 food items provided. Over the three-day event, attendees consumed over 80,000 liters of beer upon entry.
To facilitate smooth transportation, the Park worked closely with the relevant government departments and public transit operators, sharing real-time event schedules and routing information.

Towards Sustainable Sports: Large Scale Waste Decomposition System

Capable of Processing 200 Tonnes of Food Waste and Paper Containers Annually
Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) has always prioritized sustainability, incorporating carbon-reduction elements into every stage of its design, construction, and operations to create an eco-friendly, low-carbon Park for events. KTSP recently introduced a large-scale waste decomposition system from South Korea, which will be in operation during the 2025 Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens (HK7s), following a successful trial, to process food waste and paper-based waste from Kai Tak Stadium. The system can convert over 200 tonnes of food waste, paper cups, and other paper containers into compost annually. Notably, approximately 85% of the solid waste treated by the system will evaporate as water vapour, significantly reducing landfill disposal during major events and advancing Hong Kong’s sustainable sports goals.
John Sharkey, CEO of Kai Tak Sports Park stated: “During the tournament, all 33 catering outlets in Kai Tak Stadium, along with Kai Tak Mall, Dining Cove, and The Village, will offer diverse dining options for attendees. We will collect food waste, paper cups and paper containers for processing in this new system. We aim to deliver an electrifying HK7s experience while minimizing waste, supporting Hong Kong’s event economy and carbon-reduction efforts.”
