• Approval Granted for Kai Tak’s Smart & Green Mass Transit System

    1 April 2026

Hong Kong, 31 March 2026 – The Chief Executive in Council has authorised the railway scheme for the Smart and Green Mass Transit System in Kai Tak (SGMTS-KT), marking a significant step forward in the district’s transformation into a connected, sustainable hub.

The elevated system will span 3.5 kilometres, linking the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal with the MTR Kai Tak Station. Six stations – including Kai Tak Sports Park, Shing Fung Road Park, Kai Tak Sky Garden and Shing King Street – will anchor the route, strengthening connectivity across residential, commercial, cultural and recreational developments. The full journey will take approximately 10 minutes and is expected to serve a daily population of around 50,000.

The government confirmed that the scheme had undergone extensive consultation with the Legislative Council, district councils, advisory committees and stakeholders. Public response has been broadly supportive, with objections carefully reviewed and addressed before approval.

The tender process for the operating contract commenced in October 2025. The successful franchisee will be responsible for financing, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining the system, with property development rights in surrounding areas providing long-term funding support. Commissioning is targeted for 2031.

Ricky Wong Kwong‑yiu, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Wheelock Properties Hong Kong, welcomed the approval, noting that the six‑station system will enhance infrastructure and unlock the potential of PARK PENINSULA and other developments adjacent to Asia’s premier sports venue. He emphasised the project’s role in driving Hong Kong’s event economy.

Originally proposed in 2012, the Kai Tak transit system was revived in 2024 following Chief Executive John Lee Ka‑chiu’s policy address. The current scheme reflects lessons learned from earlier feasibility studies and incorporates global best practices in smart, green transport.

While the approved line will not initially connect to Hong Kong Children’s Hospital or the New Acute Hospital, district councillors have expressed hope for future extensions towards Yau Tong, Cha Kwo Ling and the hospital cluster. Authorities have confirmed that tender participants are aware of the need to accommodate possible expansion.

The SGMTS-KT represents a milestone in Hong Kong’s urban development strategy, delivering sustainable mobility and reinforcing Kai Tak’s position as a vibrant district for living, working and leisure.
