The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) revisits its collaboration with Indonesian designer Hendro Hadinata for KARANA Habitat, the expanded second chapter of the KARANA Collection first unveiled at Indonesia Design Week 2025. KARANA Habitat debuts on 15 August 2026 at Jia Curated, Bali.
Where the original collection presented three sculptural showcase pieces – the Kuta Bench, Sanur Lounge Chair and Ubud Light – KARANA Habitat grows the range into a full living and dining collection for everyday life. Four new pieces join the collection: the Klungkung Sofa, Negara Dining Chair, Negara Armchair and Negara Dining Table. The material palette also expands, with American hard maple joining red oak and cherry.
Hadinata says.
“Each timber species has its own distinctive grain and colour — maple, red oak and cherry. Although they are different, they complement one another beautifully. Rather than arranging them in random patterns, we bring the three species together into a cohesive piece, creating a harmonious visual composition,”
The collection continues to be shaped by the responsible forest management of the American hardwood forests resource. The selectively harvested, naturally regenerating American hardwood forests are the largest and most diverse temperate hardwood resource in the world. Forest volume has more than doubled since the 1950s, and annual growth continues to exceed harvest every year, meaning the resource increases in volume every year. Home to more than 22 commercial timber species, Hadinata focuses on American cherry, red oak and hard maple. Three readily available but underutilised species that are ideally suited for high quality furniture.
KARANA Habitat forms part of a wider presentation by Studio Hendro Hadinata at Lintang Pavilion, a joint exhibition with Studio Aliri, Nusae and Tradisi exploring architecture, collaboration and shared cultural practice. Lintang Pavilion runs from 13–17 August 2026 at Jia Curated, Bali.
KARANA Habitat launches with an open afternoon hosted by Hendro Hadinata on Saturday 15 August 2026 from 4:00pm, at the Lintang Pavilion, Pengembak Beach, Bali. Hadinata will introduce the collection and share his personal experiences of its creation. Visitors to JIA curated are welcome to attend and explore the collection in person.
