• The Greater Bay Area Urban Design Awards 2020 awards presentation ceremony held and roving exhibition opens today

    (9 August 2021, Hong Kong) Organised by The Hong Kong Institute of Urban Design (The HKIUD) with the support of other founding member institutes of The Greater Bay Area Urban Designer Alliance and the support of Create Hong Kong (CreateHK) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (the HKSAR Government) as the Lead Sponsor, The Greater Bay Area Urban Design Awards 2020 (The GBA Urban Design Awards 2020) was successfully launched with the awardees unveiled last year.

    To further commend the awardees, The GBA Urban Design Awards 2020 held the Awards Presentation Ceremony cum Roving Exhibition Opening on 7 August at the City Gallery in Hong Kong and Nansha District in Guangzhou concurrently in a hybrid format. Mr. LIU Chun-san, JP, the Under Secretary for Development of the HKSAR Government attended the Hong Kong leg of the event as the Guest of Honour. He was joined by other guests including Ms. GUO Jian-hua, Director of Department of Educational, Scientific & Technological Affairs, The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Regionand Ms. YUEN Choi-fong, Jersey, Assistant Head of CreateHK to present the prizes to the Hong Kong awardees and unveil the Roving Exhibition at the City Gallery in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Dr. DONG Ke, Governor of Nansha District, Guangzhou Municipality and Dr. PAN An, President of Guangzhou Urban Planning Association officiated at the Guangzhou leg to present the awards to the winners from the other cities of the Guangzhou-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area).

    In the Hong Kong Venue, Mr. Donald CHOI, President of The HKIUD, congratulated on the project’s success and expressed his gratitude towards the Organising Committee from The HKIUD and the Alliance members from Macau, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai for their continuous support and contribution that made the first biennial professional and academic urban design award scheme for the Greater Bay Area a great success with over 190 submissions received. He added that, by exploring the excellent mega projects that help develop a responsive urban system for the Greater Bay Area, The GBA Urban Design Awards could effectively uplift the region’s urban design standard from both professional and academic perspectives.

    Following the Awards Presentation Ceremony, a ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted to kick off the Roving Exhibition in Hong Kong which showcases the urban design projects attaining the Grand Awards and Merit Awards of The GBA Urban Design Awards 2020. The Roving Exhibition in Hong Kong is held from 7 August to 25 August 2021 at the City Gallery in Hong Kong.

    The GBA Urban Design Awards 2020 received over 190 entries of urban design projects in the Greater Bay Area that were nominated by the members of the five Founding Member Institutes of The Greater Bay Urban Designer Alliance, and their recommended professional institutes. The first edition of The GBA Urban Design Awards, divided into the Professional Category and the Student Category, awarded a total of 64 projects which were selected after rigorous adjudication by a jury panel formed by renowned urban design academia and practitioners. Among the awarded projects are the Cattle Depot Art Park, which won a Merit Award in the Built Project Category, and the Lung Tsun Stone Bridge Preservation Corridor, which also won a Merit Award in the Plan / Concept Category, both by Architectural Services Department of the HKSAR Government. Besides, two students from The University of Hong Kong shared the Gold Award in the Student Category.
