(20 June 2024, Hong Kong) AtkinsRéalis (TSX: ATRL), a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, has been awarded the design and engineering services contract by the government’s Highways Department, Hong Kong, for building a barrier-free access between Yau Ma Tei MTR Station and Kwong Wah Hospital. This project aims to support the city’s ongoing plans to strengthen independent mobility access and safety, and ensure inclusivity for all citizens, including the elderly and mobility impaired patients in society.

The new barrier free access from Yau Ma Tei MTR station will help patients, especially the elderly and physically impaired, visit the Kwong Wah Hospital with greater ease. AtkinsRéalis will provide design and engineering consultancy services across multiple aspects of the project to optimize efficiency with minimal public disruption. Moreover, the Company will coordinate with government agencies and project stakeholders during the construction and management phases to enable smooth execution.

“Our continuous collaboration across projects with the Highways Department of Hong Kong showcases AtkinsRéalis as a partner of choice in delivering world-class projects that support the city’s evolving needs,” said Wing Law, Chief Executive Officer, Asia, AtkinsRéalis. “Backed by our local knowledge, people-centric approach and extensive global capabilities in urban planning and land-use, we aim to deliver sustainable solutions that further help enhance local infrastructure and improve the quality of life for citizens. Once completed, the project will significantly ease mobility and accessibility, enabling people to travel independently and make maximum use of public places.”

The project will also provide a new exit at concourse level near Exit D at the junction of Waterloo Road and Tung Fong Street. It will offer a connecting lift between the subway and ground level which previously did not exist. This will see the construction of a covered walkway along the footpath directly to Kwong Wah Hospital, improving all-weather access during inclement conditions. Similarly, AtkinsRéalis supported the development works undertaken for the Austin Road Pedestrian Linkage System in the West Kowloon Cultural District, which includes universal accessibility using footbridges, elevated walkways and subways. Recognized for its outstanding design and infrastructure services, AtkinsRéalis has recently been honored with the Gold Award in the Excellence of Public Development Category from the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and a Certificate of Merit in the Infrastructure category at the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers Grand Award 2024, for their work on the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station, which was transformed into a public playground.
