• “Modular Integrated Construction” (MiC) Robotics Competition Unleashes Students’ Potential in STEM

    (12 May 2018, Hong Kong) The STEM Alliance (Alliance) formed by The Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC) and 68 secondary school members today held the “Modular Integrated Construction” (MiC) Robotics Competition at Yan Chai Hospital Law Chan Chor Si College. The competition, which aims at enriching students’ capabilities and application abilities in Engineering, Science and Innovation, attracted more than 200 students and teachers from 44 Alliance school members and local secondary schools.

    The competition consists of junior secondary group and senior secondary group. During the competition, 70 participating teams should use their pre-assembled Robotic Arm robots to build a specified building by using the prefabricated components within 10 minutes. The awards include “Fastest Completion Award”, “Speedy Completion Award” and “On Time Completion Award” in accordance with the completion time; “Best Robotic Appearance Award” and “Best Building Appearance Award” based on the looks of the buildings and robots; and “Group Award” for junior secondary and senior secondary Groups, as well as the “Overall Champion” to recognise the team spirit of the participants.

    With the aim of supporting the Education Bureau in taking forward the STEM education, HKIC formed the STEM Alliance (Alliance) in March 2018 to promote STEM education and help the next generation of construction talent better equip themselves to ensure the long term competitiveness of Hong Kong.

     

    About the Modular Integrated Construction (MiC)

    The construction industry of Hong Kong is facing with various challenges, including shortage of manpower and a surge in tender prices. It is thus important and necessary to enhance the competitiveness and productivity of the construction industry.

    The HKSAR Government will collaborate with the construction industry to promote “Modular Integrated Construction (MiC)”. By adopting the concept of “factory assembly followed by on-site installation”, independent prefabricated modules (including decoration works, fitting out and basic building services works) will be completed in factories and then transported to construction sites for installation. MiC can raise productivity, shorten construction time, enhance construction safety and improve quality of the works.
