• Steve Leung Design Group Appointed to Design Fairmont Niseko

    5 November 2026

Marking Its First Major Hospitality Project in Japan

Steve Leung Design Group (SLD) has been appointed as the main interior designer for Fairmont Niseko, a new 165-key luxury resort in Hokkaido, Japan, slated to open in early 2028. Developed by world-renowned luxury hospitality brand Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, part of the leading hospitality group Accor, the project marks SLD’s first major hospitality commission in Japan, extending the group’s design leadership into one of Asia’s most coveted alpine destinations.

Nestled within nine acres of pristine forest between Mount Yotei and Mount Annupuri, the resort will offer unobstructed panoramic views of Mount Yotei, Niseko’s iconic natural landmark. SLD will lead the interior vision for the entire guest journey — from arrival and public spaces to guest rooms, dining venues, spa and wellness facilities, and authentic onsen experiences.

A Design Narrative Rooted in Place

With the detailed design vision to be unveiled, SLD’s approach to Fairmont Niseko is guided by a clear principle: to create interiors that are intrinsically connected to their setting. Fairmont Niseko will draw inspiration from the elemental character of Hokkaido’s landscape, where volcanic geology, ancient forests and dramatic seasonal shifts converge. Interpreting the destination through a contemporary lens, the interiors will seek to evoke a timeless sense of place and a profound connection to their surroundings.

    A Personal Connection to Niseko

For Mr Steve Leung, founder of SLD and an avid skier, Fairmont Niseko also carries a personal dimension. Niseko has long held a special place for Steve, shaped by many years of annual family visits. In 2020, he designed and built OOAK Niseko, his own family holiday home in the region. Steve’s first-hand understanding of Niseko’s exceptional natural setting, seasonal rhythms and distinctive alpine resort culture will inform SLD’s design approach for Fairmont Niseko, defining an authentic and immersive guest experience that is deeply attuned to its setting.

“Over many years, I have come to appreciate Niseko as far more than a world-class ski destination. It is a place of exceptional character in every season. With Fairmont Niseko, we will translate that understanding into an international hospitality experience attuned to the landscape and the expectations of discerning global travellers, creating a genuine connection to both the spirit of Hokkaido and Fairmont,”
said Mr Steve Leung, Founder of Steve Leung Design Group.

Building on a Portfolio of Hospitality Projects Across Asia

Fairmont Niseko further expands SLD’s distinguished hospitality portfolio across Asia, encompassing landmark urban hotels and resorts such as The Londoner and The Londoner Court in Macao, The Paiza Collection at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, as well as signature dining destinations like the Swim Club at Kimpton Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong, The St. Regis Bar in Macao, The China House by Chef Fei at Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok, and KA-MON at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore. Together, these projects exemplify SLD’s distinctive sensibility for hospitality design, bringing brand identity, local context and guest experience into a cohesive whole, an approach that will shape the interiors of Fairmont Niseko.
