Mr. Michael LI Kiu-Yin, JP, Director of Architectural Services of the Hong Kong SAR Government, officiated the ceremony. The event attracted distinguished industry leaders, award-winning architects, and guests. Following the ceremony, a networking session provided an opportunity for attendees to exchange ideas and celebrate the remarkable contributions of Hong Kong’s architectural community.

HKIA President Ar. Benny Chan remarked in his speech, “High-quality architectural design not only creates livable cities but also preserves history, tradition, natural ecosystems, and biodiversity amidst rapid urban development. It enhances urban efficiency to achieve carbon neutrality, addressing the challenges of extreme weather. Furthermore, with the Hong Kong government’s recent focus on fostering creative industries and advancing innovative technology, exceptional and creative architecture and urban design play a vital role in inspiring creativity among children, which is crucial for nurturing a generation of innovative young minds in Hong Kong.

Guest of Honour Mr. Michael LI Kiu-Yin, JP, Director of Architectural Services, also emphasized the profound impact of technological innovation on architecture in recent years: “I look forward to seeing more ambitious design concepts turned into reality, completed at lower costs and faster speeds. The Architectural Services Department has been collaborating with research institutions and start-ups to incorporate more innovative elements into project designs. Beyond technological breakthroughs, we recognize architecture’s role in social responsibility. Faced with the challenges of climate change, architects continue to explore new construction methods and eco-friendly materials to reduce carbon footprints and create more sustainable urban environments. For instance, our recent refurbishment of the Tamar Pet Garden public restroom incorporated sustainable materials. For future projects, we will consider piloting structural timber where feasible. This year, we have also consulted stakeholders to develop a 3A strategy, working actively with the industry to move toward carbon neutrality.

A Platform to Celebrate Talent and Excellence, Inspiring the Next Generation of Architects

Since its inception in 1965, the HKIA Annual Awards have remained the most prestigious architectural honors in Hong Kong. This year, the awards recognized 45 outstanding projects, encompassing landmark buildings, public spaces, and innovative designs that emphasize sustainability and social impact. This year’s HKIA Annual Awards received over 100 nominations, reflecting the high level of enthusiasm within the industry. The outstanding quality of the entries highlights architects’ dedication to exploring diverse design approaches that meet functional needs while enriching public experiences. Ultimately, the jury selected 3 HKIA Annual Architecture Awards, 8 HKIA Awards, 12 Merit Awards, 3 President’s Special Awards, 12 Thematic Awards, and multiple Finalist Awards.

Through this exhibition, the HKIA hopes to provide the public with a deeper appreciation of the exceptional architectural designs created by Hong Kong architects.

The exhibition, themed “Bridging Heritage and Innovation,” transforms the Central Market space into an immersive environment that explores the intersection of traditional architectural values and cutting-edge design. Inspired by Hong Kong’s urban landscape and unique cultural heritage, the exhibition offers a meaningful experience for both industry professionals and the public.

The event also paid tribute to HKIA Gold Medal 2024 Recipient Ar. YIM Sen Kee Rocco, BBS, JP, for his significant contributions to architecture in Hong Kong and internationally. His visionary projects, including the HKSAR Government Headquarters and the Hong Kong Palace Museum, have had a profound impact on the built environment.

The HKIA 2024 Annual Awards Exhibition is a testament to the transformative role of architecture in shaping communities and enhancing urban spaces. By recognizing these accomplishments, HKIA reaffirms its commitment to advancing architectural excellence and inspiring future generations of architects.
