• AtkinsRéalis awarded detailed design & engineering study for Tuen Mun South Extension in Hong Kong

    25 April 2024

(25 April 2024, Hong Kong) AtkinsRéalis (TSX: ATRL), a fully integrated professional services and project management company with offices around the world, has been awarded the Design and Engineering Services contract for the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation’s Tuen Mun South (TMS) Extension, Hong Kong, which will provide direct railway service to the Tuen Mun South community, meeting the travel needs of residents and workers in the area and improving their quality of life.

AtkinsRéalis was appointed by the main contractor for the TMS Extension project, CRBC-Build King Joint Venture to provide multidisciplinary design and engineering services including coordination and collaboration for the stations, viaducts and river crossings railway bridge for this project. This includes technical support covering geotechnical engineering, station structural and architectural design, statutory advisory services and site supervision. The project is underpinned by AtkinsRéalis’ digital technologies which will enhance the efficiency of the detailed design process.

“Railway development plays a critical role in enhancing Hong Kong’s infrastructure and has a direct impact on the city’s development and contribution to carbon neutrality by 2050,” said Wing Law, Chief Executive Officer, Asia, AtkinsRéalis. “As a leading design, engineering and project management organization, AtkinsRéalis is at the forefront of supporting this vision through its global capabilities, end-to-end services and sustainability solutions. Together with our partners, we’ll deliver efficient, smart, and affordable infrastructure that will engineer a better future for Hong Kong.”

The TMS Extension project will expand the Tuen Mun Line southward by approximately 2.4 km from Tuen Mun Station via a viaduct and the construction of two new stations, including an intermediate station at Area 16 and a new terminal station at Tuen Mun South near the Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal. Currently, a road journey from Tuen Mun South to Tuen Mun Station takes about 10 to 20 minutes during rush hours. With the TMS Extension, the same journey by railway is expected to take no more than five minutes. The TMS Extension will help relieve road traffic congestion, reduce roadside air pollution, noise nuisance, and carbon emissions. By leveraging the expertise of AtkinsRéalis, the project will incorporate sustainable elements into the station design, integrating with the surrounding environment while maintaining aesthetic appeal. From harnessing the power of nascent technologies that deliver seamless, personalized passenger experiences, to optimizing operations and reducing risks through decades of experience in engineering excellence, AtkinsRéalis is helping customers around the world to change the face of rail travel. In Asia, the company is a major partner in key infrastructure projects across the region including Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Rail Link, the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, Central Reclamation Phase III and was most recently awarded the project for the Lung Kwu Tan Reclamation and the Re-planning of Tuen Mun West Area, Hong Kong.
