• CCCC Riverside Plaza

    11 September 2023

Located at the heart of the Yangpu Waterfront in Shanghai, the CCCC Riverside Plaza is a work-learn-play-culture destination of tomorrow and a new city landmark that embraces the area’s culture, nature and heritage – a bridge between the past and future.

Developed by China Communications Construction Company, the CCCC Riverside Plaza is located at the gateway of the riverside in Yangpu District in Shanghai. With a total construction area of 189,200 square meters, the project is composed of 7 building units. Among them, Tower A is a 160 meters high-rise tower (3 floors underground and 32 floors above ground); Tower B is 98 meters (3 floors underground, 19 floors above ground);  Block C is a historic listed building; and Block D, E, F and G offers retail amenities and public facilities.

The project is an important carrier of the company’s “dual company headquarters” strategy in China, at the same time, deepening engagement with the city to fully support Shanghai’s social and economic development.

Gensler won an international design competition and was entrusted to create a vibrant and flexible environment linking people and built environment with respects to the history of Yangpu Waterfront.

High-rise Block A office tower top out

On August 18, the main structure of the high-rise Block A office tower topped out. This marked a significant milestone for the CCCC Riverside Plaza project and development of the Yangpu Riverside southern commercial district, further invigorating the area’s commercial and urban development.

Building a future that embraces the past

The design of CCCC Riverside Plaza is inspired by the industrial riverside architecture, culture, and philosophy, that includes the original waterworks and shipyards. Leveraging the heritages of the past and connecting the present to the future, it is a continuation of history weaving into the urban memory.

Gensler believes in maintaining and upgrading the existing urban fabric to rejuvenate the cultural heritages of the area. The two towers, oriented towards the Huangpu River and Lujiazui, are looking into the future, connected to the history of the Yangpu Waterfront. As part of the project, Gensler’s proposal included preserving and restoring the historic buildings to keep the memory alive.

Gensler design team worked closely with the heritage preservation consultant on the project to research about the materiality of the historical buildings, the relationship between new and old materials as well as to the historical fabric.

“We can look at this project as a link between the past and the future, as a prototype for restoration renovation, and keeping the old memory of the place alive as we move confidently into the future.”

The optimized walkability strategy utilizes street grids and small-scale building connectivity. Street-level connections boost the retail value with pedestrian-friendly open space, connecting to the riverside communities.

The project prioritizes the goal of “People, Profit, Planet,” integrating the office, retail and cultural venues with green open spaces and corridors to create a unique community of diverse spaces, programs, and experiences, enhancing the interactions between people and nature.
